What's The Story
When the New York Subway opened in 1904, its founders declared that the system was a "great public work", where every design element showed respect for customers and improved the experience of travel through beauty and design. Continuing on this philosophy, in 1985 the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York created the MTA Arts & Design, formerly known as the Arts for Transit and Urban Design. The program commissions art from artists all throughout New York. Since its formation, the MTA Arts & Design has installed art in more than 260 transit stations. Over 300 artists have been commissioned for the program, including graphic artists, photographers, musicians, and poets. |
